Critical acclaim for Ojalá, out now on Bella Union:
“An expansive collaboration… There are striking variations in texture and colour, the haunted folk of She Led Me Away, featuring Midlake’s Tim Smith, rubs against Ghostpoet’s worldweary patter on Reckless, while the concussed country–rock of Life Inside a Paradox, sung by Horse Thief’s Cameron Neal and Sharon Van Etten, coexists with Marissa Nadler’s frosted piano lament Winter’s Approaching… A quiet coalition, but one that is wholly satisfying.” MOJO – 4 Stars ****
“An album which glides by harmoniously, no two songs alike, but all sharing a sonic richness and reflective atmosphere… A beautiful, haunting album.” Record Collector – 4 Stars ****
“A beguiling debut… Raymonde elicits gorgeous perfomances from guest vocalists such as Marissa Nadler, ex–Midlake frontman Tim Smith and The Innocence Mission’s Karen Peris.” Uncut – 7/10
“Melancholy indie rock with flashes of soul and improv jazz… A welcome return for the erstwhile Cocteau Twins bassist.” Q – 4 Stars ****
“An hour of exquisitely spun compositions: Raymonde’s crystalline guitar adornments and piano arpeggios sparkling elegantly throughout.” Long Live Vinyl – 8/10
“A shimmering, expansive album that finds beauty in melancholy.” GQ
Lost Horizons is the musical project of former–Cocteau Twin and Bella Union boss Simon Raymonde and Richie Thomas of early 4AD figureheads Dif Juz. Their debut album Ojalá incorporates a heady cast of guest singers. Some are signed to Bella Union, such as Marissa Nadler and former Midlake frontman Tim Smith, while others are long-time favourites of Raymonde’s (Leila Moss of The Duke Spirit and Ghostpoet), or newer discoveries (Beth Cannon, Hilang Child, Gemma Dunleavy and Phil McDonnell). Together, the Lost Horizons ensemble has created an hour of exquisite, expansive and diverse spellcasting.
