Bella Union x SXSW 2018
Returning to Austin for their 21st year at SXSW in succession, UK independent label Bella Union, home to artists like Father John Misty, Beach House, Flaming Lips, M Ward, Wild Nothing, John Grant, Explosions in the Sky, Midlake, Dirty Three, etc will host a very special label night on Saturday 17th March at one of the city’s best venues, The Parish, starting at 8pm.
Highlighting the philosophy of the label of not just working with established names but very much developing unknown artists from the beginning of their journey, the Saturday evening showcase will feature 3 young artists yet to release their debut plus 3 artists who have 10 albums between them. When Bella Union discovered unknown Seattle band Fleet Foxes in 2007, little could anyone have guessed they would sell well over a million albums in Europe. As Beach House prepare to release their seventh album for Bella Union since their debut in 2006, the commitment from the label AND of course from the bands too (Dirty Three, Beach House, Josh Tillman, Explosions in The Sky etc have been with the label from their first releases) shows that it is still possible to find “Artist Development” in the music business!
From Dallas, Tx the skewed punk-pop of ARI ROAR kicks the party off at 8pm. For fans of artists like Wire, Cass McCombs, Elliot Smith.
Next up at 9pm is a duo called FIELD DIVISION, who prepare to release their debut Dark Matter Dreams. Recorded in various places as the ever-on-the-move pair drove across the States, but mostly with Midlake’s Mckenzie Smith at his place in Denton, where the band have since relocated.
Half-Welsh half-Indonesian newcomer HILANG CHILD release his debut Years later in 2018 and he heads over from his hometown of London to play his first ever US shows in Austin for SXSW. his set is at 10pm.
One of the most brilliant songwriters the label has ever signed is New Zealand-er TINY RUINS (aka Hollie Fullbrook) and she is putting the finishing touches to her new LP for a release later this year. Her last Brightly Painted One is one of our best selling albums in our Brighton vinyl store. She plays at 11pm
At midnight be prepared to be blown away by Aussie/ Greek duo XYLOURIS WHITE. You won’t see anything like this again. Dirty Three’s Jim White (arguably one of the greatest drummers alive) and lute legend of Greece George Xylouris have created one of the most unique and jaw-dropping live sets out there. Do not miss.
Headlining is the incredible EZRA FURMAN. A brilliant performer and an exceptional songwriter who is somehow able to channel the best bits of Springsteen, Lou Reed, Lennon and David Bowie into his tiny frame and create one of the most vital artists out there today. New LP Transangelic Exodus is out now, and if you read music press you will get a sense of its importance, its cultural significance. If you don’t, you will love his boldness as a writer, his acerbic wit and his ability to hold a mirror up to his own failings and by doing so, give us a window into our own. One of the best rock n roll shows you see this year!
