Broen share new single “You (Detective)”
Having announced themselves to a UK audience via first single “<3”, young up’n’coming Norwegian five-piece BROEN unveil their new single “You (Detective)”, the second track from their upcoming debut album, due for release this Autumn on Bella Union. With its twinkling synths, squelching bass and funk guitar ushering in vocalist Marianna Røe’s soulful vocals, the track perfectly exemplifies the poppy–yet–questing eclectic spirit that defines this exciting young band. Listen now below:
Broen have already been championed by The Guardian, Consequence of Sound and BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne. Combining elements of R’n’B, rap, jazz, improvisation, psychedelia, dub and electronica, Broen ignore the usual genre conventions to create their own unique sound. They have built up a reputation of being one of Norway’s finest live bands, presenting something completely out of the ordinary. Sparkle-laden costumes and signature dance moves are rivalled only by their own live prowess and musicianship.
As guitarist Lars Ove Fossheim explains: “We all had the need for a new music that was freer and inviting to all different kind of influences. The music really emerges from the different backgrounds we all have, but with the same desire to create something that is free from boundaries. We are influenced by everything from Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar to Talking Heads and Paul Simon. Interplay and improvisation are important parts of our writing and playing – it keeps the music alive.”
